by Ankit Agarwal May 21, 2024

Cold brew coffee a topic is introduced in this article, which highlights its unique flavour- one that is smoother and less acidic.

Several brewing approaches are described here, which consist of immersion, French press, Mason jar, slow drip (Kyoto Style), and coffee bag methods.

Each method includes the necessary items used for it as well as the step-by-step guide. The blog also gives suggestions on how to master cold brew such as fresh coffee usage, size of grind to be employed and ratios to play around with.

This tutorial is aimed at helping coffee lovers find and perfect their own cold brew process.

Introduction:

Cold brew is becoming popular in recent times due to its less acidic flavor and hence loved by coffee drinkers all over the world. It is prepared when coarsely ground coffee beans are steeped in cold water for a longer time than hot brewing techniques.

Later, it can be boiled and served over ice or combined with milk. This article will explore different cold brew coffee brewing methods.

Understanding Cold Brew

Understanding what makes cold brew unique is crucial before delving into the brewing methods. The extraction procedure is where the main distinction is found. Coffee grinds are steeped in cold water for 12 to 24 hours to make cold brew coffee.

Compared to hot brewing, this method extracts various chemicals, making the drink smoother, less acidic, and naturally sweet.

Benefits of Cold Brew:

There are various benefits of cold brew:

  1. The flavour is more sweeter and smoother as the bitter components are removed,
  2. It can be used with a variety of base like milk or water
  3. It has a long shelf life of two weeks when stored in the refrigerator properly.

Cold Brewing Techniques

1. Immersion Technique

The most popular and simple way for brewing cold brew coffee is the immersion method. It calls for steeping coffee grinds in cold water for a considerable amount of time.

Equipment Needed
  • Coarse coffee grounds
  • Cold water
  • A large jar or pitcher
  • A fine-mesh sieve, coffee filter, or cheesecloth
  • A stirrer

Steps:

  1. Measure and Grind: First of all, use a ratio of one part coffee to four parts water or 1:4. For example, one cup coarsely ground coffee with four cups cold water.
  2. Combine: Fill your jar or pitcher with cold water then add the coffee grounds for mixture.
  3. Stir: Ensure that all the grounds are damp by gently stirring them.
  4. Steep: Cover the jar and allow it to steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for twelve to twenty-four hours.
  5. Strain: When finished steeping, pour the liquid into another container using cheesecloth or coffee filter or fine-mesh sieve as strainers.
  6. Serve: Use ice cubes, creamer or milk if you wish

2. The Kyoto-Style Slow Drip Method

The Kyoto-style drip method, also called the slow drip method, entails slowly pouring cold water over coffee grinds.

Although this procedure takes longer and needs certain equipment, the result is a subtle, complex flavour character.

Equipment Needed:

  • A slow-drip cold brew tower
  • Coarse coffee grounds
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Steps:

  1. Configuration: Put your slow drip tower together. If preferred, add ice cubes and cold water to the upper container.
  2. Calculate and Process: Use a 1:10 coffee-to-water ratio. 50 grams of coffee, for instance, is equal to 500 millilitres of water.
  3. Grounds of Loading: Put the coffee grinds in the tower's centre part.
  4. Drip rate adjustment: Set the drip rate to approximately one drip per second.
  5. Collecting Brew: Pour water over the coffee grinds and gather the coffee in the lower container. This could take a few hours to complete.
  6. To serve, pour the concentrate over ice after diluting it as necessary
3. The French Press Approach

Another practical and accessible method for making cold brew coffee is with a French press. This technique combines the ease of use of the French press with the immersion approach.

Equipment Needed:

  • French Press
  • Coarse coffee grinds
  • Cold water

Steps:

  1. Grind and measure: Use a 1:4 coffee-to-water ratio.
  2. Combine: Fill the French press with cold water after adding the coffee grounds.
  3. Gently stir to make sure all of the grounds are dissolved.
  4. Steep: Cover the French press with the lid, but do not submerge. Refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours to steep.
  5. Plunge and Strain: To extract the coffee grounds from the liquid after steeping, gently press down with the plunger.
  6. Pour the chilled brew into a glass and adjust the strength to taste.
4. The Mason Jar Technique

Although it makes use of a Mason jar for ease and simplicity, the Mason jar method is comparable to the immersion approach.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mason jar with a cover
  • Coarse coffee grinds
  • Cold water
  • A coffee filter or fine-mesh sieve

Steps:

  1. Grind and measure: Use a 1:4 coffee-to-water ratio.
  2. Combine: Pour cold water into the Mason jar with the coffee grinds added to it.
  3. Stir: To make sure all of the grounds are moist, stir it.
  4. Steep: For 12 to 24 hours, cover the jar and place it in the refrigerator to steep.
  5. Strain: Pour the coffee into another container after straining it through a fine-mesh sieve or coffee filter.
  6. Serve: Dilute and savour as you please.
5. The Coffee Bag Technique

This method makes the brewing process more simpler by using a homemade or premade coffee bag.

Equipment Needed:

    • Coffee bag or DIY coffee bag made of muslin or cheesecloth
    • coarse coffee grinds
    • Cold water
    • large pitcher or jar

    Steps:

    1. Prepare Bag: Stuff Bag with the appropriate quantity of coffee grinds if you're using a homemade bag.
    2. Immerse: Put the coffee bag in a pitcher or jar and add enough cold water to cover it.
    3. Steep: For 12 to 24 hours, cover and steep in the refrigerator.
    4. Take Out the Bag: Once the coffee has steeped, take out the bag and gently squeeze to extract any leftover liquid.
    5. Serve: Dilute and savour as you please.

Tips for the Perfect Cold Brew:

    1. Always use freshly ground & roasted coffee beans so that the coffee tastes its best
    2. Ensure coffee grains are coarse so as to avoid over-extraction and bitterness
    3. Use clean, good quality water
    4. Keep it in an airtight container, properly refrigerated.

    Conclusion:

Cold brew is very much loved and popular among coffee lovers since it tastes less acidic. There is always a cold brew that can satisfy every coffee enthusiast. Find your favourite cold brew and enjoy the tasty sip & ensure to make memories  by experimenting with various ratios all  through the year.
