Different Ratios of Brewing Cold Brew at Home

by Ankit Agarwal August 28, 2024

Cold-brewed coffee has become very popular since it has less acidity and a richer taste compared to ordinary iced coffee.

Unlike traditional hot brewing styles, the cold brewing process involves soaking coarse ground coffee with cold or room temperature water for a period of not less than 12 hours up to 24 hours.

The outcome is a strong brewed coffee that can be served on ice with water added to the drink or with milk.

The most important aspect controlling the quality of brewed cold coffee is the proportion of coffee to water which directly determines the strength of the coffee, its flavor, and texture.

Whether you like a strong and bold cup of coffee or a more delicate and subtle taste, knowledge of the best roast for cold brew ratios will help you achieve your ideal cup of cold brew.

What is Cold Brew?

The stepping coffee grounds are kept in the water at room temperature or cold temperature for a prolonged period usually somewhere between 12 hours to 24 hours. The outcome of this is a smooth and barely acidic coffee concentrate that can be served with ice cubes, diluted with water, or simply just mixed with milk.

Significance of Ratios

The cold brew's body, flavor, and mouth feel primarily depend on the coffee-to-water ratio. If the coffee ratio is on the higher side, the coffee will be stronger or more intense, while if the ratio is on the lower side, the coffee will be on the lighter side.

Standard Cold Brew Ratios

1: 4  Ratio  (Strong and Intense)

  • How to Make: Take at least 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee and around 4-5 cups of water
  • Flavor: on the stronger side. Ideal for people who love to have strong coffee and choose to dilute their coffee with some walk or milk

  • 1:5 Ratio (Balanced)

    • How to Make:  Take 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee and at least 5 cups of water.
    • Flavor:  This is one of the best roasts for cold brew ,this ratio is a balanced one that offers a strong but smooth flavor. It’s best for people who enjoy black coffee or coffee with just a hint of milk.

    1:8 Ratio (Milder and Light)

    • How to Make:  Take 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee and up to 8 cups of water.
    • Flavor: The flavor is on the lighter side and one of the best coffee roasts for cold brew. It’s an excellent choice for those who prefer milder coffee or enjoy their cold brew coffee with plenty of milk or sweeteners.

Balancing the Ratio According to Taste

    Experimenting with ratios

    • 1:3 Ratio (Extra Strong): If you want extra strong coffee you can go for this ratio. For this take 1 cup of coffee with 3 cups of water. The result will be a highly concentrated cold brew that can stand a considerable amount of dilution with milk and water
    • 1:6 Ratio (Medium): if you want to try something that is not too strong and not too light you can go for this ratio. It is one of the best roast for cold brew. You can enjoy this as it is or can add a little amount of milk

    Customizing Your Brew

  • Type of Coffee - coffee type can impact the flavor of your cold brew. A richer and more chocolaty flavor is produced by the dark roast whereas light roast tends to have a highly acidic and fruity flavor
      • Grind Size - For making cold brew coffee, coarse grind size is recommended to avoid over-extraction. The taste of cold brew can get bitter if the grind size is too fine
    • Brew Time - The flavor can differ according to brew time. If you brew the coffee for a shorter time like up to 12 hours it will result in a mild flavor, while if you brew your coffee for a longer time like 24 hours the flavor will be more strong and intense.

    Tips for Perfect Cold Brew

    • Try using fresh coffee- The best of the flavors are produced by fresh ground coffee. You can also grind the coffee beans before brewing.
    •  Use of Filtered Water - Try using filtered water to make your cold brew coffee  to prevent any off-flavor from the use of tap water

    Conclusion :

Brewing coffee at home to perfection is always productive and this is well seen when brewing cold brew coffee.

Depending on your preference, you can easily alter the amount of coffee you put into the amount of water used to ensure you get the right taste and concentration of the coffee you desire.

Apart from the best roast for cold brew ratios, the coffee profile includes the type of coffee, grind size, and time of brewing, and with the assistance of all these parameters theoretically, there are no limitations to alteration to get one of the best coffee roast for cold brew.

By fine-tuning your cold brew process, it is possible to make each glass exactly to your taste and enjoy a refreshing drink at any time.

Types of Coffee Roasts: Light, Medium, and Dark—How They Impact Flavor

by Ankit Agarwal August 24, 2024

Everyone looks for the perfect brew, but the taste of your coffee greatly depends on the roast of the beans. Roasting is the process of preparing green coffee beans and transforming them into the aromatic, flavorful beans used to brew coffee.

Roasting is the process of heating the beans to varying intensities, ranging from light to dark; each roast affects the acidity, body, and flavor profile of the beans.

Depending on whether you like the sharp tones of your coffee, the mildly sweet flavor of a mid-roasted coffee, or the deep, intensive taste in the cup of strong-roasted coffee – the knowledge of these differences does enhance your coffee experience.

    • Light Roast

    Characteristics :

    • The colour of the light roast is light brown. The beans retain much of their original size and shape, as they are roasted just enough to develop their flavors
    • Light roast does not contain any oil on its surface
    • The coffee beans are roasted at the inside temperature between 180 C to 205 C

    Flavor Profile :

Most natural flavors of the coffee beans are preserved in the light roast, which helps in showing its distinctive characteristics like the origin of the coffee beans from where it is grown, the soil, and climate conditions. Light roast is known for its -

    • A high acidity level gives the coffee a lively and intense taste
    • Have a lighter body, which makes it more refreshing
    • Have fruity and floral notes like citrus and berry

Prominent examples - Colombian Light Roast and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

Ideal Brewing Methods - Aero press, Pour over, and French Press

    • Medium Roast

    Characteristics :

    • The color of the medium roast is medium brown, which is darker than the color of the light roast
    • The medium roast has little to no oil on its surface
    • The coffee beans are roasted to a  temperature of 210 C to 220 C

    Flavor Profile:

The flavor of the medium roast has a balance between natural flavor and the deeper roasted flavor of the beans which are usually developed during the roasting process. Medium roast is known for -

    • The sweetness is increased during the medium roasting which leads to a balance of acidic and sweet flavors
    • In the medium roasts, you get a  much broader range of flavors such as caramel, hazelnut, and nutty while maintaining the original essence of the beans
    • The mouthfeel of the medium roast is fuller and rounder, offering a more pleasing experience

Prominent Examples - City roast, American roast and breakfast roast

Ideal Brewing Methods - Espresso, drip coffee maker and cold brew

    • Dark Roast

    Characteristics -

    • The color of the dark roast is dark brown
    • Dark roast has an oily surface due to the long roasting time
    • The coffee beans are roasted at the inside temperature between 225 C to 250 C

    Flavor Profile:

The original flavor of the dark roast is suppressed due to high roasting time so you mainly get the flavors that are developed during the roasting time. Dark roast is known for -

    • The acidity content is quite low making the coffee a like more smoother with a hint of bitterness
    • Due to the high roasting time, the flavors that come out are rich, deep, and smoky flavors with a hint of chocolate and spices
    • The mouthfeel of the dark roast is quite thick and strong

Prominent Examples - Full City Roast, Vienna Roast, French Roast and Espresso Roast

Ideal Brewing Methods -  Espresso Machine, Moka Pot and Percolator

    How Roasting Impacts Coffee Flavor

During roasting, the physical and chemical properties of coffee beans are changed, affecting the coffee's flavor. Let us talk about some of the factors which are affected

    1. Acidity

    • Light Roasts: Have high acidic content with bright and tangy flavors.
    • Medium Roasts: Moderate acidity, balancing acidity with sweetness
    • Dark Roasts:  Have Low acidity which leads to a smoother taste with a hint of bitterness sometimes

    2. Flavor Complexity

  • Light Roasts: Original flavours are preserved
    • Medium Roasts - Have a balance of both the original flavor and the flavor that is developed during the roasting process
    • Dark Roasts - The roasting flavors overpower the original flavors, the flavors are uniform and strong

    3. Body

    • Light Roasts: Having a light  body, making the texture of the coffee feel thinner
    • Medium Roasts - Have a medium body and the mouthfeel is fuller and smoother
    • Dark Roasts - have a heavy body, the mouthfeel is quite thick and strong

    4. Aroma

  • Light Roasts: Have floral and fruit aroma
      • Medium Roasts: Usually have Nutty, and sweet aromas sometimes give a hint of chocolate aromas
  • Dark Roasts: Have a bold and smoky aroma

  • Conclusion:

The journey from green bean to brewed coffee is as influenced by the roast level as by the origin or brewing method.

There is a difference in these three types of roast and each has its characteristics that appeal to various consumers. Thus knowing how roasting impacts acidity, flavors, body, and aroma enables a more informed choice of the roast profile that is most ideal for a given palate.

No matter how strong and hot you like your coffee for it to have a citrus flavor or for it to taste like charcoal, understanding this effect of roasting will enable you to appreciate your cup of coffee.

Nishant's Love For Specialty Cold Brew

by Ankit Agarwal August 21, 2024

    Tell us about yourself:

I'm Nishant Arora, AVP - Transactions at Qdesq, and a proud member of the coworking ecosystem where coffee is practically a lifeline. ☕️

My typical workday is packed with client meetings, often held at coworking spaces, and yes, there’s always a cup of coffee involved, no matter the time of day. If we’re not meeting in the office, you can bet I’m taking clients to a great coffee shop.

On weekends, I make it a mission to explore at least one new café or coffee shop, discovering what fresh ideas they’re brewing in the coffee world. And at home, I’m still living that childhood moment where parents ask their kids to perform in front of guests—except now, I’m asked to show off my coffee-making skills!

How did you get introduced to Specialty Cold Brew?

I have to admit, coffee has been a part of my daily routine for as long as I can remember. But over time, it started to contribute to my acidity levels, so I had to find an alternative. That’s when a client introduced me to cold brew coffee, which he sourced from South Korea. Since then, it’s become a regular part of my routine.

At first, it was tough to find cafés in Delhi NCR that offered cold brews, but in the last few years, availability has really taken off. My love for cold brew has grown so much that I have started preparing my own at home and store it for later. While I do have other equipment to brew in different styles, cold brew just hits the spot for me—and it’s super easy to take on the go.

How do you like your Cold Brew?

Cold brew is fantastic on its own, but whenever I get the chance, I like to mix things up a bit. One of my favorite combos is adding a splash of ginger ale, half a teaspoon of lemon juice, and a generous amount of ice to the cold brew. Stir it well, and you’ve got one of the best ways to beat the heat.

Another great mix: a bit of cranberry juice, a dash of soda, topped with ice and cold brew. Give it a good stir, and you’ve got yourself a refreshing drink that’s hard to resist.

What do you think is ‘The Next Wave’ of coffee?

The coffee ecosystem in India has evolved drastically. We've moved from instant coffee to savoring rich South Indian filter coffee, embraced a growing café culture with espresso-based beverages, and now we're diving into specialty cold brews and beyond. It’s been quite a journey, and as trends continue to evolve, more and more people are developing a deeper appreciation for coffee.

Cold foam, barrel-aged brews, nitro cold brew, citrus-infused drinks, sparkling water, and a variety of milk options—these are some of the hottest trends in the coffee world right now. I believe the next big thing will be pairing these innovative beverages with the perfect food choices, making the experience even more irresistible.

All the best to you guys, keep growing.
