Latte vs Cappuccino: What's the Difference?

hidden

September 19, 2024

The primary difference between latte and cappuccino is found in the ratios of the espresso, steamed milk, and foam, together with their texture and presentation.

Cappuccino and latte are two of the most famous coffee products worldwide, but they provide different tastes for coffee lovers.

Each beverage consists of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, and the ratio differences, and the textures of the finished products.

These alterations to milk, foam, and espresso make for the textural experiences, tastes, and values.

Whether you enjoy a smooth latte, rich milk texture in your cappuccino, or heavy texture in your Americano, knowing the differences is essential for choosing the right cup of coffee for every occasion.

Latte vs Cappuccino: Ingredients & Ratios

Both drinks almost have the same basic components—espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam—but the proportions of the content are quite different

  • Latte (Caffè Latte):
    • Espresso: 1 shot  [ can be more sometimes]
    • Steamed milk: 175-220 ml, which is much more than what goes in  cappuccino
    • Foam: A light layer of foam on top [ around 1 cm ]

  • Cappuccino:
    • Espresso: 1 shot
    • Steamed milk: 60 - 90 ml, which is less than latte
    • Foam: Thick, airy foam around 1-2 cm,  much more than in a latte)

Latte vs Cappuccino:  Texture and Mouthfeel

The texture and mouthfeel are two of the primary differences between latte and cappuccino. Here's a r dive into how they differ:

    Latte

  • Texture: A latte has a creamier, smoother texture as more steamed milk is used in its preparation. The milk is heated to a silky consistency but remains liquid, with only a small layer of light foam on the top. This gives the latte a rich and soft feel as it contains more milk.
  • Mouthfeel: When having a latte, the experience is mainly one of sipping warm creamy milk with a fine espresso taste. The light layer of foam on the top adds a little airness but the drink is usually smooth and warm. Because of the milk-to-coffee ratio, the espresso blends perfectly with the milk, lessening the intensity of the coffee.

  • Cappuccino

    • Texture: The cappuccino has a lighter and fairer texture due to the thick foam layer on the steamed milk's top. The foam is more immense, producing a light and airy layer on the top of the espresso.
    • Mouthfeel: Having a cappuccino gives you different combinations of textures. In the first instance, you experience the light, airy foam, which feels a little fluffy and dry on the tongue. Under that, there’s a slight amount of steamed milk, which is still warm but less creamy than the latte. The result of which is a more balanced drink with noticeable layers of foam, milk, and espresso. The foam on the top of the cappuccino acts as an insulating layer keeping the coffee warm while giving a contrast in mouthfeel between the light foam and the stronger espresso under it.

     Latte vs Cappuccino: Flavor Profile

The flavor profile is another major difference between latte and cappuccino, mainly directed by their different ratios of milk, foam, and espresso.

    Latte

    • Milder Coffee Taste: The high amount of milk content in the latte dilutes the espresso's intensity, resulting in a much milder and creamier coffee. The taste of the espresso is still there but it gets lighter with the amount of steamed milk present, making the drink smoother and less bold
    • Creamy and Sweet: As a larger quantity of steamed milk is present in the latte, the flavor of the latte is generally creamier with natural sweetness from the warm milk. The espresso blends well with the milk and provides a well-balanced flavor with the bash of strong coffee.
    • Less Bitter: As the latte is mainly dominated by milk, it is less bitter than other espresso drinks. The milk softens any kind of bitterness from espresso, making the latte a gentler, more approachable coffee option, especially for those who want a smoother experience.

    Cappuccino

    • Stronger Coffee Flavor: The cappuccino has less milk content as compared to the latte and has a thick layer of foam, The espresso flavor in the cappuccino is much stronger which offers an intense coffee experience.
    • Balanced with Foam: While the amount of espresso makes the drink stronger,  the layer of foam at the top gives a light, airy texture to the drink, which somewhat lessens the bitterness of the espresso.
    •  Different Layers of Flavor: Cappuccinos are generally known for their layered structure, which gives different flavors as you drink through the foam, steamed milk, and espresso. The foam adds a light, almost nutty, or sweet flavor, while the milk provides a creamy element that still allows the espresso to shine.

Latte vs Cappuccino: Origin & Culture

Both latte and cappuccino have their origin in Italy, but they have different purposes.

    • Latte means milk in Italian and is conventionally more of a morning drink due to the high amount of milk present in it. It’s more common in Western cultures, where people like larger coffee drinks more.
    • Cappuccino is normally served as a morning drink in Italy and not usually after 11 a.m., as it is believed by Italians that milk-heavy drinks aren’t appropriate after meals.

Caffè latte has less intensity of the coffee and more of steamed milk making it go well for people with a sweet taste and soft palate.

On the other hand, cappuccino contains layers of foam, milk, and strong coffee flavor that combine in a perfect balance to offer a better taste.

Sipping the creamy latte or the cup of a thick and strong cappuccino can be equally satisfying to any coffee lover.
